22-23 January 2009: Microfinance as a Tool for Peacebuilding, Intl. Symposium - Cali, Colombia Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 January 2009

How can microfinance serve as a tool to promote peace and stability for victims of conflict? How to support the successful operation and expansion of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) in conflict-afflicted societies like Colombia and others? These are the main objectives of this year's international symposium on Microfinance as a Tool for Peacebuilding, taking place in Cali, Columbia.

As communities strive to overcome conflict, there is a pressing need for income generating activities in order to move towards economic and social stability.

MFIs can assist the massive demobilization of ex-combatants and reparation programs by providing these individuals with access to credit, savings and other banking services.

Some of the questions addressed during the symposium include:

  • What are the pros and cons of providing seed money to victims and/or ex-combatants for start-ups?
  • How does the provision of microcredit to those being reintegrated differ from the usual microcredit programs?
  • What are the main features that need to be addressed when planning and implementing microfinance programs in conflict and post-conflict settings?
  • How can equitable access to resources strengthen peaceful coexistence?

More information on the symposium and how to register can be found here.

Thursday, 29 May 2008

This year’s International Disaster and Risk Conference takes place under the motto: “Public-private partnership – Key for integral risk management and climate change adaptation”.  A particular focus will be set on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, Critical Infrastructures, Pandemics and Diseases, Integral Risk Management, and Guidelines and Standards.  More information on the conference can be found at http://www.idrc.info/.

Micro-finance tools (incl. microinsurance) will play a decisive role to cope with the various risks and to accelerate economic and social recovery after a disaster.  However, there is still reluctance in introducing and using these methods. IDRC Davos 2008 will highlight with a number of specific sessions the existent methods, discuss a number of case studies and reveal gaps for future improvement.

Moreover, GRF Davos will publish a special book on “Microfinance and Disaster Risk Reduction” by selecting a restricted number of papers submitted to the conference and by inviting potential authors to submit a paper for this book. For more information please see the Call for Papers .
